Autism Assessment Process

Our autism assessments follow a structured, evidence-based multidisciplinary approach in line with current clinical guidance and best practice.

1 – Initial Enquiry & Screening

Following your initial enquiry, we will send a free screening questionnaire to gather some background information about current difficulties, developmental history, communication, social interaction, sensory differences, and day-to-day functioning. This initial screening helps determine whether there is sufficient evidence to suggest that a full autism assessment may be appropriate before moving forward to the next stage. Our team will review the information provided and discuss the outcome with you.

2 – Comprehensive Questionnaires & Information Gathering

If the screening suggests that a full assessment is appropriate, further questionnaires and information forms will be sent out. These may include:

Developmental and behavioural questionnaires

Sensory profile information

Emotional well-being and functional assessments

School, college, or workplace information where appropriate

Reports or supporting evidence from professionals already involved

3 – Autism Observation Assessment (ADOS)

An autism observation assessment will then be arranged. This assessment helps clinicians understand communication style, social interaction, behaviours, interests, and sensory presentation. Assessments may be offered:

Face-to-face, depending on location and individual needs

Remotely using a laptop/computer and camera - Remote assessments are carefully structured to ensure individuals feel comfortable and supported throughout the process.

4 – Developmental History Appointment

A developmental history appointment will be arranged to explore early development, childhood presentation, education, relationships, communication, sensory experiences, routines, interests, and everyday functioning. Depending on the individual circumstances, this appointment may involve:

Parents or caregivers

Family members

The client themselves

A combination of the above

We will discuss the most appropriate approach with you beforehand to ensure the assessment is personalised and meaningful.

5 – Multidisciplinary Team Review & Feedback Appointment

Following completion of the assessment, our multidisciplinary team will carefully review all information gathered from questionnaires, observations, developmental history, and supporting evidence. A feedback appointment will usually be arranged within one week to discuss:

The outcome of the assessment

Diagnostic conclusions where appropriate

Strengths and areas of difference identified

Recommendations and next steps

Available support options

6 – Comprehensive Report & Recommendations

Following the feedback appointment, you will receive a detailed written report outlining:

Assessment findings

Clinical formulation

Diagnostic outcome

Individual strengths

Recommendations for home, education, work, and daily life

Review

I just wanted to thank you, for all the support you have given me and my family over the last few months. A has been struggling so much with her emotional wellbeing and school attendance. As a family we were worried and felt a little lost. Siobhan, you have listened and validated my feelings, I have felt comfortable enough to be open up and be honest with you. As a family we felt a little anxious about A going through an autism assessment,  you answered our questions, and explained the process really well. We felt very supported throughout and although the assessment was emotionally tough at times for both me and my daughter, we felt comfortable and listened to. When it came to A's assessment, A was anxious, you soon made her feel at ease, by explaining what autism was, and making the assessment engaging and as fun as you could to make her feel safe. Following A’s diagnosis, we have continued to feel supported and thank you for all your kindness and understanding in what has been a difficult time.
